Many outdoor chefs swear by charcoal for the smoky, old-school flavor it lends to meat--but no one likes the mess or the hassle of starting the coals, or the chemical aftertaste that lighter fluid can leave. The Performer’s Touch-n-Go ignition system uses liquid propane to light charcoal briquets with just the touch of a button. Once the coals are white-hot, you’re ready to cook. Even cleaning up afterwards won’t get your hands dirty, thanks to Weber’s patented One-Touch cleaning system--a simple sweep of a lever pushes ashes into a removable catch pan for quick and easy disposal.

The Performer’s exceptionally-durable construction includes a rust-resistant, porcelain-enameled steel bowl and lid. Heavy-duty, hinged grates made from plated steel offer easy access to the classic kettle-shaped bowl when it’s time to add briquets to the fire. A dual-purpose thermometer allows cooks to monitor the temperature inside the grill, then removes to test meat for doneness. A Tuck-Away holder holds the lid conveniently out of the way plus provides a windscreen for lighting. Rugged, weather-resistant wheels are crack-proof in the most extreme temperatures and allow easy transport, while locking casters prevent the grill from rolling while you cook. Rust-free aluminum vents adjust to provide perfect airflow in changing conditions. An integrated storage container keeps up to 20 pounds of charcoal dry and within reach, and the granite-look Thermoset work surface provides a handy place to store marinades and sauces while you cook.

Also included are welded steel charcoal fuel holders that facilitate cooking with direct or indirect heat as well as a five-pound liquid propane tank. The assembled unit measures 40 by 50-1/4 by 28-1/2 inches, with a 22-1/2 inch cooking surface. Bowl, handles, lid, and One-Touch cleaning system are covered by a 10-year warranty; cooking grate and charcoal baskets have a 1-year warranty; and the burner assembly, hose, test valve, and regulator have a 3-year guarantee. Weber grills are made in the USA. --Mary Park

I sold my $1200 gas grill and replaced it with this grill - I missed the taste and smell and control of charcoal. My favorite previous grill was an old Weber kettle grill.

My grill arrived with a small crack in the table portion of the stand. The shipping company had really beaten up the shipping carton, and I was surprised that no more damage was done. I called Weber and a VERY friendly woman apologized for the incovenience and sent me a replacement which arrived in 2 days. After using the grill, I noticed that the thermometer didn't work. A quick e-mail to the Weber web site and a new thermometer was sent (as well as an apology). The Weber people back up their product!

Grilling on this Weber is a joy - they include 2 baskets into which you pour your charcoal. The baskets are semi-circular in shape and when placed together, full of charcoal in the center of the grill, form a circle about 1/2 the diameter of the grill surface. It lights very easily and the coals are ready to cook in 15 minutes from the press of the igniter. Once the coals are lit, you can pour them out of the baskets and have coals under the entire cooking surface. But I've been amazed at how controlled I can cook by leaving the coals in the baskets. This essentially gives me a hot center grill and a cooler peripheral grill. I can sear the meat over the center, and then cook it WITHOUT FLARE-UPS on the periphery until done. Works like a champ and for fatty foods like chicken (skin on) and various cuts of prok & beef, there's no better way to cook.

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

I have been grilling and bbq'ing for over 3 years now. I have won my cul-de-sack grandmaster grilling championship for the past 3 years running and, as the cul-de-sack representative, have placed in the top 20, out of 25 mind you, of our annual neighborhood cookoff the past 3 years as well.

I know barbequinq. I know smokeing. I know grilling.

    This Weber grill is trash.

First off, it comes ... UNASSEMBLED!

For $300.00 I expect to receive a grill ready to go, straight out of the box. Bolts, Screws, Grates, Holes? I don't have time for any of that. I have to marinade my meat to be ready for prime time smokeing. I expect a grill to be ready out of the box. I don't have 8 (yes it took me eihgt) hours to put this thing together. That is a full workday. Nonsense. If I have to put it together, then it should be a heck of a lot cheaper.

Second, after I put it together I have absolutly no charcoal to cook with. Evidently the geniuses at Weber have figured out a way to cook without charcoal! I just wish they could have put these instructions for cooking without charcoal in the manual as I (along with everyone else I have asked) don't know how you cook without charcoal. Again, for the price I paid it should come with the charcoal. I went back to the home improvement store that I purchased the grill from and they insisted that it does not come with charcoal. RIPOFF!!!

Rather than argue with the employee I go ahead and buy some charcoal for the grill. He recommends some kind of fancy hardwood charcoal. I get it. I put some in the grill. I light the grill and it looks like a fire is going good. Okay, maybe despite the rough start the grill will work out. Well I have news for you. IT DOES NOT WORK!!!

I go ahead and put the Turkey on that I am planning to cook. After little more than two hours I go to check on how it is cooking. THE FIRE IS OUT! I have no idea for how long my turkey has been sitting over no heat. I just know that I am way behind now in serving dinner for my family. I go ahead and fill the grill up with charcoal and pour some more lighter fluid on. I put the turkey back on, stick a match through the grate to light the fire. Holy smokes we have a fire going now. I figure all is well so I head back inside. I go back out in 30 minutes (having learned the grill won't cook for 2 hours by itself I check earlier this time) and the turkey is charred black. Darker than midnight. Burned to a crisp. I am now steaming.

I go ahead and bring the turkey inside and cut into it. It is still FROZEN!!! How can it be so black on the outside and still frozen on the inside? THIS GRILL STINKS!!!

I cannot offer my recommendation on this grill. I was looking forward to cooking on this grill for all the positive reviews I had read, but I cannot recommend it. Either I don't know what I am doing (and I know that is not the case, ask my neighbors in the cul-de-sack) or this grill stinks. Back to the Hibachi I used in college.

If you want to put together a grill, not have charcoal included, not cook turkey because the grill does not know how, and disappoint your family, buy this grill. It will accomplish all of these tasks.

WEBER IS BAD! NUMBER NINE GRILL IN AMERICAN IS BETTER THAN THIS ONE! DON'T BUY THIS GRILL IF YOU LIKE TO EAT TASTY FOOD!

To the people that have been criticizing my review. Let's see your trophies. I have mine stacked up. Thanks for your opinion though. I stand by mine.

Purchased a Performer 2005 to replace worn-out 16-year old original Performer. Like the increased height, don't like plastic deck versus stainless steel. Surprised to find gas ignition system now uses small torch/lantern bottles versus the old 1-gal refillable propane tank, but seemed to be a positive change. However, the new gas system leaked and when sufficient torque was applied to shut off gas valve the plastic knob rotated on the valve shaft so I could not turn it back on. Called Weber and they very quickly sent me a new igniter regulator/valve which seems to stop gas flow with reasonable torque. A major improvement to this new gas system would be a shutoff ball/plug valve versus the current rising stem needle valve.

All things considered I would rather buy a new "old" model Performer versus the "2005" model if one were available.

We bought this for my husband for Father's day. I researched grills and talked to people who own a Weber. Great reviews from Weber owners. Grill heats up quickly and stays hot for a long time. I choose this model because it has the attached table and the charcoal keeper is an added bonus. A table is a must and to already have it attached is nice. The assembly was fairly easy. There is also a temperature gauge that pulls out and can be used to test the temperature on the meat you are cooking. Looks like Weber thought of everything with this model. Removing ash is very easy with the One-Touch cleaning system. There are also air vents both top and bottom to adjust the heat. Again Weber thought of everything with this model. We have a gas grill but you cannot beat a charcoal grill in flavor. Our ribs came out excellent on this. Although I gave 4 stars, I would have given 5 except I thought it was a bit pricey. But quality is great and I highly recommend this product. I received it quickly and Amazon had the best price. Great product!
